Dingle-Berry Hound and the Brain Model Sheets

Model Sheets for "Dingle-Berry Hound" and "The Brain." The stars of my animatic "The Brain of My Existence." For a little back story on each of them...

Dingle-Berry Hound: Is not a hound at all, that’s just his last name. He’s actually a Chinese Crested – a breed of dog that more closely resembles a rat with a mullet than a dog. Which is appropriate since he is a complete pest. He’s that one friend you have who has no regards for your personal space, your belongings or even your feelings at times, but you keep him around because he’s a riot and he makes for great stories. He’s a drug dealer by profession, with the pipe-dream of being “an actor” enough to rival the greats like Bugs Bunny or Woody Woodpecker (or the underrated Gandy Goose and Sour Puss.)

He is the Cartoon Character – the creation. The embodiment of what we as cartoonists want to be (impulsive, funny, interesting) but with all the baggage too (reckless, self-destructive, immature, at times un-caring.)

The Brain: : The Creator. The Cartoonist. The Brain is a self-portrait, in a surreal sort of way. If Dingle Berry Hound is the embodiment of what we as cartoonists want to be, the Brain is the embodiment of what we most often actually are like; controlling, grounded, and maybe just a little depressed. The Brain is also at times almost motherly to Dingle-Berry – its creation. When Dingle-Berry becomes reckless with his drinking, it concerns the Brain. When Dingle-Berry unwittingly harms and eventually kills the Brain, the Brain is not just concerned for their own existence – but Dingle- Berry’s as well. For all these reasons, The Brain plays the straight man opposite to its creation. Despite the fact that deep down, it knows it wants to be the cartoon – the lovable and the memorable fantasy and not the forgettable and un-interesting reality and truth.

The Brain of My Existence

For my OTHER senior project class, I made a near 6 min animatic. "Dingle-Berry Hound" (who's actually not a hound at all but a Chinese Crested) is my oldest creation that I still currently use. I came up with him in high school. and I'm working on a pitch for him and writing some comics about him, so expect to get to know that little shit better. "The Brain" character is actually a self portrait, in a way (hence the glasses) and the film is mainly about how I feel about being a cartoonist - constantly overpowered and overshadowed by my work and unable to control my art even as it destroys us both. Haha I jest - I love being a cartoonist. But it does get rough sometimes.

I Don't Give a Damn 'Bout My Reputation

The sixth and final installment of the "pop culture project." Decided to wrap it up with Freaks and Geeks because I don't give a damn 'bout my bad reputation ;)

Tambourine and Sasquatch Model Sheets

Model sheets for Tambourine and Sasquatch! Made a few tweaks so that’d they’d be easier to animate/easier to keep on model maybe even HALF of the time haha.
So yeah, for those of you not in the know, these are the stars of my first book and will probably continue to be in many many more of my projects. They are boyfriend and girlfriend. Tambourine is a hippie born 30 years to late, and Sasquatch is a cryptozoological marvel.
They have a lot of common interests such as not shaving, not bathing, getting high and playing the didgeridoo at all hours of the night.

Lovey Dovey Gushy Mushy Goo Goo Crap

So yeah - got myself a man now! Which means despite all the work I have to do before finals and graduation, I'm a big pile of happy mush.

My roommates all tell me it's quite gross actually.

Anyway, he's super fun to draw! Although I think my style doesn't really do his handsome face justice. Rats!

2 Dirty Hippies Front and Back Covers

Here they are! While I can't upload the whole book online, I managed to get the book into the hands of publishers at MOCCA and hopefully something good will come of that! If not, and enough people are interested, I could self publish and sell them online.

Bluntman and Chronic VS Walt Flanagan's Dog

Fifth installment of the Pop Culture Illustration project! Since I did a Clerks illustration with only Randal and Dante, I figured Jay and Silent Bob needed a piece of their own (or Bluntman and Chronic, as the case may be.)

Also yeah, I'm not above being a complete nerd and making a Walt Flanagan's Dog reference.

No Women, No Kids

The fourth installment of my pop culture illustration series for my senior thesis.

"No Women, No Kids."

Arnold, My Love, My Sultry Pre-Teen

So, "Hey Arnold" is on Netflix. While the show didn't particularly influence my art style, it was one of my absolutely FAVORITES as a kid. And honestly? Watching it again it still really holds up. Both the art, and the writing! I can't think of another kids show that touches on subjects like neglect, alcoholism, immigration and even homelessness in a kid-friendly way.

And yeah, I'm still a little bitter that Helga never got her sultry pre-teen by the series end.

Me Myself and I

Just Save Up All Your Nickles and Dimes

The third instillation of my cult classic film illustration series! I felt I needed a black and white piece to go with the set and what better film for that than Clerks?Kevin Smith films have been such a huge influence to my writing style. Clerks, Chasing Amy and Dogma all have a place on my favorite films of all time list.

FREAKED

The second installment of my Pop Culture Illustration series! Decided to do two Alex Winter films in a row and do the under-rated cult-classic FREAKED! I had a lot of fun with this one - I looked at a lot of vintage sideshow posters for inspiration. And if you haven’t seen the movie you should definitely check it out! It’s got Mr. T as a bearded lady - what more do ya need?

Who Was Noah's Wife?

For my senior project here at Pratt, I'm doing a series of illustrations all based around pop culture! All of the movies, cartoons, comics, and tv shows that have both made an impact on popular culture, and me as a person. So, needless to say, for the first in the series I HAD to do Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.

...yes, my senior project is basically fanart. It was my professor's idea. Fight me, haha!

Get Your FREAK on, Ricky Coogan

A little sneak-peek of a much larger, much more elaborate, illustration I’m working on. So keep your peepers peeled for that.
For all of you UN-CULTURED SWINE out there (haha I kid), this is Ricky Coogan from the 1993 cult film FREAKED; written, directed and starting Alex Winter (Bill S. Preston Esquire). I’ve only seen it recently, but it’s already on my top favorite movies of all time list. I just can’t find a damn thing wrong with this movie (and if you know me, you know that’s REALLY saying something.) It’s just 100% original, creative and hilarious. Check it out:

Insane in the Membrane

A page from my sketchbook. This character design is for a secret project of mine that I’ll be working on for the next couple of months. I’ll probably post a lot of in-progress work and sneak peeks ;)
…just what in the devil am I up to NOW?

Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy

Harley and Ivy! Because I owe these girls everything for getting me into comics and whether you think they're lesbians, or just really REALLY good friends - they're adorable (when they're not causing havoc and even then...aw)

Be Excellent To Each Other and Party On Dudes!

More Bill and Ted fanart - because I've been introducing the movie to a lot of people lately (I can't believe how many people have never seen it) and I've been watching the Hannah Barbara cartoon as well...which is SURPRISINGLY good, by the way! Yeah, it's typical "Saturday Morning Cartoon" cheese, but for Bill and Ted? That kind of works! Plus the show has some pretty strong in betweens, great voice work from Alex Winter, Keanu Reeves and George Carlin, really great character designs for the Bill and Ted, and some genuinely funny jokes inbetween all the cheese - which is fun anyway! You should check it out:

But anyway - this is just more inking practice, as well as having fun with Bill and ted's designs. I based my designs off of the designs used in the series a little bit (especially Ted) but I played with it a bit too.

Also, more crazy 80's patterned bgs from this radical tumblr.

Wyld Sexy Stallions!

So I said Shallow Gravy from the Venture Brothers was one of my fictional bands, right? Well my other favorite is WYLD STALLYNS!

Because Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure is one of my favorite films of all time. Top 5 easily. Not because it's particularly thought provoking or artistic, but because it's just SUCH a feel good film and oddly inspirational to me - if these two morons can pass their history report, I can become a successful cartoonist. I also just love how genuine and sweet Bill and Ted's characters are - it's impossible not to love them (and the fact that they're played by hunky Keanu Reeves and equally hunky Alex Winter doesn't help...woof!)

So I did this bizarre caricatures of them, to show my love.

I did not draw the pattern though - that was a find on this lovely tumblr right here. Just a retro late 80's, early 90's pattern to dress up my inks more than a plain ol' white background could ever do.

Shallow Gravy Unplugged

Got a request to draw more of my favorite fictional band, Shallow Gravy! The idea was to do a little illustration based on the acoustic version of their hit single "Jacket" because...is it just me, or do Doc and Jackson sound oddly...sultry here?

Listen for yourself and you tell me!

Not that I'm complaining.

Miguel and Tulio - Mighty and Powerful Gays

I've been getting requests on Tumblr to draw more "Road to El Dorado", because it has more of a fan-following than I realized, and...why not? I love to draw men cuddling, and I love taking these great character designs and making them really cartoony.

But mostly I love drawing men cuddling.
